A Poem for the Pause - Alice Walker

"As a culture we are not in the habit of respecting, honouring, or even acknowledging the pause. (Culturally the most common reference to the pause was given over to Coca-Cola, which promised 'The pause that refreshes'. In other words, whenever there is a moment you are not busily doing something, Eat, Drink. And here's what we want you to eat or drink). Women know this very well. At menopause, a time of extremely high power and shape shifting, we are told to behave as if nothing is happening. To continue the 'game' of life as if we are still girls. We are not girls. And to continue to act as if we are robs the world and the coming generations of our insights. Insights readily available to us at this particular time which is a highly significant universal moment of reflection.
I am convinced that in earlier times women during menopause drifted naturally to the edge of the village, constructed for themselves a very small hut, and with perhaps one animal for company - and one that didn't talk! - gave themselves over to a time without form, without boundaries. They were fishing in deep waters, reflecting on a lifetime of activity and calling up, without consciously attempting to do so, knowledge that would mean survival and progression of the tribe."
Alice Walker - We are the ones we have been waiting for (Pages 39 - 40)

In the book from which the above quote comes from, Alice Walker then shares a poem called "Until I was nearly fifty", that she says she could not write until she was through a particular pause time in her life. She couldn't write it before or during this pause because before she could get to the point of "generosity to youth" that the poem describes, she had to "enter into, give herself over and endure the pause."

She then share the poem below, which she says is from that same period but just as "the pause was coming to a close and she could begin to see some gifts".

Loss of Vitality

Loss of vitality
Is a sign
That
Things have gone
Wrong.

It is like
Sitting on
A sunny pier
Wondering whether
To swing
Your feet.

A time of dullness
Deadness
Sodden enthusiasm
When
This exists
At all.
Decay.

You wonder:
Was I ever “on”
Bright with life
My thoughts
Spinning out
Confident
As
Sunflowers?

Did I wiggle
My ears
& jiggle my toes
From sheer
Delight?

Is the girl
Grinning fiercely
In the old photo
Really me?

Loss of vitality
Signals emptiness
But let
Me tell you:
Depletion can be
Just the thing.

You are using
Have used
Up
The old life
The old way.

Now will rush in
The energetic,
The flexible,
The unmistakable
Knowing
That life is life
Not mood.

Singalonga Saturday - wondering what to do to make this world a fairer and more compassionate place.

"When the poor come to you in great need, begging for food, do not harden your hearts against them. Remember that the poor may once have been rich, and you may one day be poor."
- from The Rig Veda

Apart from all the personal stuff going on again with me, I have also been feeling a tad angry, concerned and hopeless about the political/social situation here in the UK. In the world in general. This is nothing new.

Right now I am wondering what to do to make a difference. Of course I work in "helping people", and that means I can make a difference in small ways to individuals and their families.

However I am angry and concerned about the decisions that are being made, about the skewed view we seem to have in the "developed world" to what is valuable - now not simply "what" but "who " is valuable and worthy.

I want to do something instead of just watching it all happen.....but what? I can march I suppose. In Egypt people were so angry they demonstrated to get the elected president removed. Here few people turn out to demonstrate. We turn on the TV or find other ways of numbing out, instead.

Thanks to Robert in the past two days I have been listening to the one and only Billy Bragg. Who always makes me feel fired up and ready to take action. Here he is singing another Woody Guthrie song and speaking about history repeating itself.

Singalonga Saturday: from "City of Angels"

"When someone tells you the truth, lets you think for yourself, experience your own emotions, he is treating you as a true equal - as a friend."
- Whitney Otto

My blogging is getting a little lazy lately. I'm sharing lots of music videos and my #365 days photographs. It's hot and my brain seems only able to just about cope with work issues. The heat is lovely and I want it to last forever. Our house is full of young twenty somethings and I am finding the lack of privacy and space difficult. Mr S is having some work issues again, whereas I have a fantastic opportunity coming up (most likely). There is so much going on right now, most of it challenging in some way(even positive ways), and I am really trying(and often failing) to have a positive attitude towards it all. When there is so much that is positive on offer to me, within the challenge, why is it that I feel like packing up my bags and walking out of my life?

I miss a true friendship of equals. It seems a long time ago since I experienced that.

Much needed music on this particular Monday.

More new to me music. It has been helping me "come back from the cold" this weekend.

For anyone grieving today.

Another week of sunshine. The week that Andy Murrary won the men's singles in the hottest final ever. #365days

Summer is finally here but don't let them hear you say it. Shhhh! Keep it to yourself.
Day after day of sunshine is wonderful.
We are trying not to complain about the heat as we don't get much here in the UK, but boy is it hot!
I went away for the weekend and no exaggeration, it feels as if one of the people I was with actually saved my life.

Things are very exciting for me right now. My heart is also in my mouth. Those whisperings of self doubt and fear started up almost immediately.

I am also throwing tantrums left, right and centre(it feels a little like John McEnroe on Centre Court all those years ago shouting at the umpire that "you gotta be kidding man" and "you're the pits of the earth").
We still have our young lodgers hence the tantrums. I am being such a child!

So anyway this person really brought me some calm. I returned from my short visit after a major explosion the day I left home, feeling much more balanced and at peace. My reasonable self has returned.
For now.

My new cards are telling me that compromise is not always an option and to stay true to myself first and foremost. I am wondering to what exactly they are referring, as there are several options. However it will all become clear I am sure, in time.

Anticipating the weekend and a funny sign: 5th July
From the train window: 6th July
Watching the final on the train home(unmissible): - 7th July

Fuchsias and Frog: 8th July
While walking I spotted shiny fences and shadows: 9th July
My new cards arrived today: 10th July
A bird on the car bonnet is worth two in the bush: 11th July
